Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to emotional healing and trauma resolution including issues such as PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental trauma. It utilizes somatic awareness and mindfulness as primary tools. It was developed by Dr. Peter Levine, PhD based upon over 40 years of research and study into stress physiology.

How does it work?
Somatic Experiencing® draws on the latest cutting edge research in the fields of traumatology, neuroscience and physiology. It is modeled on how animals engage physiological processes to discharge the freeze energies associated with survival in the wild. As a result of their innate discharge process wild animals are rarely traumatized, even though their lives are often under threat.
Although humans have virtually the same innate self-regulating mechanisms as animals, we often inhibit these processes. Our undischarged energy stays trapped in the body and from our body’s perspective it can still feel under threat even years after a traumatic event. This causes a range of symptoms including chronic pain, anger, PTSD, depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts etc.
Through conscious awareness of physical sensations, Somatic Experiencing® allows the individual to access restorative physiological patterns and to resolve trauma symptoms. Clients are guided to develop increased tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and repressed emotions and to gradually turn off the threat alarm that causes severe nervous system dysregulation.
